Global Sensor Systems and OMS Express Demonstrate AI-Powered Fleet Safety System with Support from Ontario Government Through Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN)

Global Sensor Systems Inc. completed development and real-world testing of SecurePath™, an automatic braking system that uses LIDAR and AI to prevent reversing collisions in commercial vehicles, with support from the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN).



Mississauga, Ontario – August 25, 2026 – Global Sensor Systems Inc. (GSSI), a Canadian leader in fleet safety technology with more than 47 years of experience, today announced the successful completion of SecurePath™, a next-generation AI-powered fleet safety system developed in partnership with OMS Express, an Ontario-based transportation and logistics provider.


The project was supported through the OVIN R&D Partnership Fund, with a $100,000 investment from the Government of Ontario and over $231,000 in industry contributions from GSSI and OMS Express, for a total project value of more than $331,000.

The SecurePath™ project leveraged LIDAR and advanced AI to successfully demonstrate an automatic braking system that prevents reversing collisions in commercial vehicles.


Backing accidents remain a leading cause of fleet incidents, particularly in waste management, logistics, and construction, where drivers face limited visibility, tight working spaces, and long shifts. Unlike passive safety tools that rely on cameras or alarms, SecurePath™ actively stops the vehicle when an obstacle is detected, removing the human variable from the equation. By advancing this technology in Ontario, the project strengthens the province’s leadership in smart mobility and helps make roads and worksites safer across North America.


Over the course of the 12-month project, Global Sensor Systems built 25 SecurePath™ prototype units and installed them on OMS Express trucks across Ontario for pilot testing. Each unit combines LiDAR, Time-of-Flight cameras, and digital video, fused through proprietary AI computer vision algorithms to detect pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and static obstacles in real time, then automatically apply the brakes when a collision risk is identified. Data logging modules captured operational performance and near-miss events from real-world use, allowing the team to iteratively refine both the hardware and the AI detection software. The system was optimized for the low-light and high-dust conditions typical of waste collection and construction environments. Driver feedback was gathered through interviews and weekly follow-ups with OMS Express operators, and a patent application for the technology was completed and filed during the project period.


OMS Express served as the industry partner for the project, providing access to its commercial fleet for real-world testing and validation. The collaboration allowed GSSI to evaluate SecurePath™ under operational conditions and confirm the system meets the demands of the logistics industry.
